We are days away from opening and would like to give you another sneaky peak into the wonderful products we are featuring within our store. Mariska Miejers is an Amsterdam based artist and designer who a few years ago decided to quit corporate life to pursue her artistic dream. We discovered Mariska’s designs at the Paris design show Maison et Objet and knew they were perfect for Pad Deco.
To allow you to get to know Mariska and her deisgns and inspirations, we took the chance to ask her a few questions on your behalf.
Mariska, have you always had a passion for design?
Yes I did. As a child I used to make over my room at least a few times a year and it has never changed. The purchase of a single object can be the trigger for a complete make-over. I love beautiful, original objects and art for the home, arranging and combining them without applying rules or following trends.
Where do you get your inspiration?
I draw inspiration from virtually everywhere. I travel a lot for work and pleasure. Places, people, city vibes, just sitting sipping coffee observing people, a gallery, museum, good food.
How would you describe your style of design?
I am dedicated to create original, uplifting designs that are authentic, welcoming and distinctive. Something that makes people happy and makes them hold on to it. I don’t want to create nine day wonders but modern classics with a twist that can be effortlessly combined.
How did you start your business?
I just started. There was no real plan. The only thing I knew when I quit my banking job in 2006, was that I wanted to give my life creative direction. I have no formal art or design education. At the time I only painted as a hobby. The first few years were tough because I divorced at the same time as starting, but gradually I found my direction and started with 4 pillow designs in 2009 and my business has built from there. Now my collection consists of pillows, trays, small furniture, wall paper, lamps shades and with lots more to come.
What is it about Pad Deco that made you agree to having your products featured in our store?
I simply love the Pad Deco design aesthetic. I am confident that my collection is in excellent hands and that my designs will be used in exciting ways as they are real mix masters!
What do you see as the key trends for 2015?
I am not really a follower of trends but it is clear that people crave more and more for authenticity and craftsmanship.
How should we use one of your creations in our homes?
My creations are overall vibrant, bold and colourful. One pillow can already make a statement placed on an interesting chair.
How could we use one of your designs in our home, such as the tray table?
I find the tray tables in my collection ideal as the have a collapsable base and are therefore flexible and multifunctional in use. If you have a smaller living space you can use it as an extra side table when having guests or for a lazy tv dinner. When not used as a table, one can still use the tray! Tray table in Tribal Ikat is made out of hand pressed birchwood in Scandinavia. It is water, heat and food proof, perfect for busy life!
Thank you to Mariska for this interview. We can’t wait to show you how her designs will transform any room in your home.
